Lagos Sets Safety Standards for Retail Gas Operators in the State.
The Director General Lagos State Safety Commission Mr. Lanre Mojola in his keynote address at a one - day training program in conjunction with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources tagged: Safety Commission Training for Retail Gas Operators in Lagos State said the program was organized to profer solution to incessant gas explosions and fire incidences that often leads to loss of lives and properties in the state. According to him," cars, appliances and utilities can be replaced but our lives is irreplaceable". He said once life is irreplaceable, it now behoves on us to do all that is needful to protect our lives devoid of hazards. He maintained that once explosion ocurred moral, financial and reputation of such organization are eroded. He averred that we will continue to learn as long as we live, he urged participants to learn, unlearn, relearn and cascade knowledge impacted to colleagues and organization. explosions may occur when gases are aldulterated, cylinders mishandled or when industrial and cooking gases are used close to sources of ignition. Other causes are proliferation of gas retail outlets as well as improper training of operators and users on safe handling of gas. Mojola appealed to all operators in this critical sector to cooperate fully with Government operatives when they arrive their facility, “We are convinced that at the end of this annual exercise, Lagos will become a safer place for all” he said. Different papers were presented by different safety experts including Director Oil and Gas, Engr. Sesan Odukoya from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, on Cooking Gas penetration policy and regulatory of retail business, Mr Adeyinka Adebiyi spoke on Gas cylinder and Emergency Management, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Fire prevention, Evacuation procedures and proper usage of fire extinguishers and alarms amongst others.
LASG SEALED 8 LOCKUP SHOPS WAREHOUSING FIREWORKS.
The Lagos State Government has sealed 8 commercial lockup shops on Dosunmu street, Lagos Island, warehousing firecrackers in very unsafe conditions. In a statement issued by the The Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Special Duties & Intergovernmental Relations, Hon. Gbenga Oyerinde reiterated Mr Governor's commitment to the protection of lives and properties of Lagosians noting that the safety of people comes first. He said Safety Commission being one of the agencies under the Ministry will continue to leave up to its responsibilities by identifying unsafe conditions and providing mitigation against them. He said anyone or market places found flagrantly violating safety rules will face the full weight of the Law.
Fire Safety : Embrace Safety Consciousness as we Approach the Festive Season LASG Enlightens Traders.
The Lagos State Government has initiated an awareness campaigns for traders in Balogun market and other markets across the city, emphasizing fire safety precautions. In a joint statement from the Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, the goal is to educate market participants on preventing fire incidents, especially with the approaching yuletide season. Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director General, instructed them on precautionary steps, such as removing combustible materials, switching off electrical devices, avoid overloading sockets and promptly reporting any fire incidents for a swift response from emergency services. The emphasis is on fostering a fire safety-conscious mindset to safeguard lives and prevent fire outbreaks in the state. In conclusion he informed the traders to please call the States emergency numbers 737 and 112 in the event of any fire accident and should ensure their personal safety first. In the same vein, the Director, Lagos Fire and Rescue Services, Mrs Adeseye Margaret Abimbola also corroborated what DG, Safety Commission has Mojola said, that Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, don't want any of them to die but be living in healthy and good conditions. The Director, Lagos Fire and Rescue Services, who was represented by Mrs Ololade Alelamole , advised the market men and women to always prevent fire at their markets by not overloading electrical sockets and desist from storage of petrol in their markets and as a matter of importance avoid anything that could cause electrical spark in their markets. She hinted that the sensitisation would take them to almost 20 markets across the state, adding that fire safety is everyone's responsibility.. The Fire officials also displayed practicals on fire prevention and elementary fire fighting. The Director said that the tips to the market men and women were imperative to prevent fire disasters and to imbibe safety consciousness during the forthcoming yuletide season in markets and other places of public interest. She said, “We are here to converse for the economic development of the State, we don’t want incessant fire outbreaks in our markets any more and we know that all these incessant fire outbreaks are as a result of peoples negligence and carelessness. “Our people should be careful in handling fire because any mishandling can lead to disaster, all electrical appliances should be put off before locking up the shops for the day.” She also called for cooperation among the market operators and fire service to achieve a zero fire outbreak incident in Lagos State.
